US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Meets Daw Aung San Suu Kyi


On 2nd December, 2011, the Secretary of State of the United States of America Mrs. Hillary Clinton and team met with NLD General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at her residence. The team led by Mrs. Clinton included Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Michael Postner, Special Representative and Policy Coordinator for Burma Derek Mitchel, US Chargé d’Affaires for Burma Michael Thurston and diplomats from US Embassy in Burma. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi at the presence of U Han Thar Myint met the team and details of discussion are not disclosed.

Mrs. Clinton and team continued to meet with NLD Central Executive Committee members and Committee Representing People's Parliament (CRPP) members. NLD CEC members such as Vice Chairman U Tin Oo, General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Win Tin, U Than Tun, U Hla Pe, U Nyunt Wai, U Ohn Kyaing, U Nyan Win, U Han Thar Myint, U Win Myint, Dr. Daw May Win Myint, CRPP members U Aye Thar Aung, Nai Ngwe Thein, U Pu Cian Tian Htan and U Soe Win attended the meeting.

Firstly, NLD Vice Chairman U Tin Oo discussed about the current situation that after the meeting between Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the President U Thein Sein, there were some improvements in Burma's political situation but there are still a lot to be done for reform process. There are still many political prisoners in prisons across the country. It is believed that it is the thing that Mrs. Clinton discussed in Naypyidaw with government. It is necessary to release all political prisoners immediately without any condition so that the process for the national reconciliation would be accelerated. Another thing that the NLD would like to emphasize is about cessation of armed conflicts in ethnic areas. There are still human rights violations occurring especially in Kachin, Shan and Karen States due to these armed conflicts. He would like the United States to urge the government cease fire and resume the peace talk with ethnic forces. He supported the engagement of the US to the present government.

Then CRPP Secretary U Aye Thar Aung discussed that ethnic nationalities wanted cease fire in ethnic areas and resumption of political talk. Ethnic nationalities' wish is to build up the federal union. Then Nai Ngwe Thein and U Pu Cian Tian Htan followed his discussion about ethnic affairs.

Secretary of State responded that she came to Burma to observe developments in the country by herself and saw some changes. But there are a lot to do more. She thought it was a right decision for the NLD to re-register and contest in the coming elections. She would closely watch any developments in the country and continue to help democratization and development of Burma.

After discussion, Mrs. Clinton and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi strolled in the compound of her residence on the bank of Inya Lake. Then they met with about 150 reporters waiting outside the house and held a brief press conference.
