Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Pays Respect to Sitagu Sayadaw

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, general secretary of the National League for Democracy, paid her respects to Sitagu Sayadaw U Nya Neikthara at 1500 on 14 June. 

The abbot, who was preparing to inaugurate a Buddhist University in North Dagon, Rangoon, took Daw Aung San Suu Kyi around the campus and gave a sermon.

Anniversary celebration of 1990 elections held

 

 

 

On 27th May, 2011, 21st anniversary of 1990 elections was held with two programs; greeting political prisoners recently released and reciting papers regarding elections.

About 250 people including NLD Vice Chairman U Tin Oo, General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other Central Executive Committee members, NLD members from States and Divisions, 36 former political prisoners recently released from jail attended the ceremony. Vice Chairman U Tin Oo made some introductory speech also on behalf of U Win Tin who has been hospitalized. Then Daw Aung San Suu Kyi greeted political prisoners.

For the second part of the ceremony, papers on elections were recited by U Sai Saw Aung, Joint Secretary of Shan Nationalities League for Democracy on ethnic people's view on the reason to participate in 1990 elections, NLD CEC member U Win Myint on the reasons why NLD participated on 1990 elections and former Chairman of Union Democracy Party U Phyoe Min Thein on the reasons why he did not participate in the 2010 elections.

On 16th April, the last day of Thingyan festival, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi distributed moteloneyeibaw (Burmese traditional Thingyan snack) to Thingyan revellers, twice in the day; in the morning and in the afternoon, which made a traffic jam as a lot of cars made a queue to receive the snack. Revellers hailed her as 'A may Suu' (mother Suu) or 'Our mother Suu'. They also greeted her by handshaking. She distributed a box of moteloneyeibaw to each car totaling 600 boxes. No harassment was reported.

Complaint about confiscation of land and forced labor in Aung Lan Township lodged

On 21st March, 2011, farmers from Ywarma Htone, Aung Myay Gone, Kwin Hlanand Aung Myay Tharyar villages, Aung Lan Township, Magwe Division lodged a complaint to the Office of International Labor Organization in Rangoon about the confiscation of 120 acres of the farmland that they have used for farming for about 40 years. In the complaints, they described about confiscation of land by Defense Industry No. (15) of Defense Ministry since 1999 and they have been forced to work in construction and running of that factory.

In the complaint, they also expressed that in-charge of the factory Major Nyo Myint confiscated some farmlands for Defense Industry – 15 in 1999 and later the confiscation extended to 120 acres owned by farmers from 13 villages in the surrounding areas. Moreover, farmers were also forced to work in construction of roads for the factory, making bricks, felling trees for firewood, ploughing and working in physic nut fields, and so on. And some products from their fields were forced to sell to their factory in fixed price. The farmers had to work for the factory as they were afraid of having their farms confiscated again. Now the farmers were forced to relocate to other places.

Chinese owned expanded banana plantation in Kachin State

It is reported that local people are worried about rapid expansion of banana plantation owned by Chinese company in ethnic people’s paddy fields along the way between Myitkyeena and Bhamo.According to so-called projects of Sino-Burma economic cooperation agreement, Chinese agricultural companies extends banana plantation with permission from Burmese authorities.


Chinese companies brought heavy machinery such as tractors and loaders from China as well as their own Chinese workers. Local people lost not only their plantation but also their employment. Moreover, banana plantation needs much water causing natural spring and stream used up and people will have difficulty even for their drinking water.

Despite Kachin farmers’ complaints to authorities concerned, no action has been made so far.
