On 10th May, 2011, a ceremony organized by NLD Social Aid Committee providing educational assistance to family members of political prisoners was held at the headquarters of NLD. About 300 people including NLD Central Executive Committee and Central Committee members, NLD Rangoon Committee members and family members of political prisoners attended the ceremony. U Hla Thein, a member of Rangoon Social Aid Committee mastered the ceremony and Vice Chairman U Tin Oo made some remarks to honor political prisoners and their family members.
Then General Secretary Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said in her speech that political prisoners did politics for their political belief. They believe that every people have right to determine the country's fate. They must have right to create a country that they want to live in. With that belief, they do politics. They have been arrested and are now in the prison for 60 million people to be able to live in freedom. NLD assist political prisoners in three ways; (1) legal assistance, (2) health care, and (3) educational assistance for their children. Assistance comes from people in general. Therefore, it is clear that people respect, rely on and support politicians although they cannot participate in political activities by themselves. Family members of political prisoners should also behave to earn their due respect and support. And she encouraged people to continue to achieve democratic aim.
Then U Nai Nai, head of the Rangoon Social Aid Committee made some remarks. 123 children from 77 families of political prisoners were provided 40,000 kyat each for their educational expenses in coming academic year. Vice Chairman U Tin Oo, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, U Win Tin, U Than Tun, U Hla Pe, U Nyan Win and U Nai Nai handed over the assistance to each of the children.
